As an editorial photographer in Minnesota, I’m always photographing various events for one publication or another. This week it was the demolition of the Ozmun building, which started on Monday of this week. This is the first step in building Mayo Clinic’s new $5 billion “Bold Forward Unbound” expansion project, which centers around a new downtown hospital that will connect to Gonda via a skyway. They plan to start construction later this year and finish the project in 2030. The Ozmun Building complex, which includes Ozmun West, Ozmun Center, Ozmun East, and a parking ramp, stands on the site of the former Olmsted County Courthouse. The section being torn down in these photos (Ozmun West) is the former courthouse in which they later added onto. And Rochester’s original courthouse (1866) also stood on this section of land, if I’m not mistaken. In the early 80s I attended Central Jr High, which sat right across the street where the Dan Abraham Healthy Living Center is now located. We could look out the windows of our classrooms and watch police cars go in and out of the underground garage. Bolander is the company doing the demolition work of the Ozmun buildings, as well as the former Lourdes High School.
