I recently photographed the new Front Street project in Mankato, Minnesota, for Red Door Creative and ISG. I spent a few hours walking up and down the street, both in the morning and in the evening light, capturing images of this recently completed project. I love to photograph architecture and have been shooting local projects for Paulsen Architects and I&S Group, via Red Door Creative, for nearly 15 years.
The reconstruction of three sections along Front Street is part of a larger effort to remake the space into a more pedestrian-friendly, civic plaza-type area. The streets were narrowed to slow traffic so drivers can both see the local businesses and street happenings but also to increase safety for bikers and pedestrians. Sidewalks were widened and enhanced landscaping and streetscaping were added to accommodate patio seating al fresco style and give the area a public market style feel. The newly enhanced plaza and sidewalks also provide interaction with the outdoor environment and add an element of character to the area, as well as expand the capacity and seating options at local restaurants.
