I was recently hired to spend some time documenting an ENT surgeon at the Mayo Clinic here in Rochester, Minnesota. I absolutely love healthcare photography, so was thrilled to get a chance to shoot in a surgery room during an actual procedure! The surgeon, Dr Erin O’Brien, is an alum of DePauw University and was on the cover of their magazine 25 years ago, so they wanted to do a follow-up story on what she’s doing now. After photographer Dr. OBrien in the entry area of Mayo Clinic’s Gonda Building on Tuesday morning, I then met her in the surgery area on Wednesday morning and got to spend an hour shooting while she was doing a surgical procedure on the sinus area of an elderly gentleman. Thankfully the lighting in the operating room was pretty neat and dramatic, so I didn’t have to set-up any of my own lighting equipment. I just walked around with two camera bodies—one with a 35mm 1.4 lens and another with an 85 1.8 lens—and shot away. Below are a few of my favorite images from this healthcare photography shoot. Enjoy!
